Inspiring the masses, one post at a time.

Song of the Day – Friday 12/2/2010 Freedom or Death December 3, 2010

Toronto duo Steve Fernandez and Sway, aka Freedom or Death, have been involved in the Canadian music world for the past 20 years as DJ’s, music teachers, and as past employees for Sony’s music label.

Their time spent at a major label gave the two working-knowledge of how the music industry treats their musicians and oftentimes stifles their creativity.  Those lessons inspired the group’s name which comes from the Greek War For Independence where the battle cry was “Freedom or Death.”  As an unsigned band, the group “have the freedom to make the music and the artistic choices that they want” but the true test will come when the labels come a knockin’…

Song of the Day – Monday 11/29/2010 OMD November 29, 2010

Yawwwn…stretch.  What’s going on?!  Am I still in a turkey-coma or am I having my favorite John Hughes dream?   You know what dream I’m talking about: It’s 1986, and I’m driving around in my pink Karmann Ghia, hanging out with Duckie and listening to The Smiths, New Order, and OMD!  I love that dream.

Wake up!  OMG, it’s 2010 and OMD has released a new record!!!

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark released their 11th studio album, History of Modern on 9/28/2010 which is their first album since 1996, and the first album featuring the classic 4-piece line-up since 1986’s The Pacific Age

So go on, download the new album, transfer it to cassette, and let’s drive on over to TRAX and kick Steff’s preppy little ass!

OMD – Sister Marie Says

Song of the Day – Thursday 11/4/2010 Houses November 4, 2010

Chicago dream pop duo, Houses are boyfriend/girlfriend, Dexter Tortoriell and Megan Messina. After Dexter was laid off, he and Megan moved to Hawaii into a cabin that did not have electricity, gas, or plumbing.  During the day they worked for meals by learning  to cultivate microorganisms, and at night they would record music and paint.

Dexter states, “The music comes from a place of love and ease.”  But apparently, man can’t live on love alone, so once the two went broke, they moved back to Chicago and released their first album.

The band’s debut album, All Night dropped on 10/19/2010 on Lefse Records.

Houses – Soak It Up

Song of the Day – Thursday 9/30/2010 Blue Sky Black Death September 30, 2010

Blue Sky Black Death are a San Francisco hip hop/shoegaze duo (aka Kingston and Young God) named after “a skydiving phrase alluding to beauty and death.”

Their latest album, Third Party dropped on 9/7/2010 with “third party” collaborator, Alexander Chen (of Boy in Static and The Consulate General) on vocals.

Song of the Day – Tuesday 5/11/2010 Delorean May 11, 2010

Synth-poppers, Delorean are a Spanish four-piece that formed in 2000 in the Basque region of Zarautz…now based in Barcelona, they’ve been described as mixing the darkness of The Cure with the paleness of Elliott Smith.  Their new album Subiza will drop on 6/8/2010.

Delorean will be performing at Popscene in San Francisco on 6/10/2010.

Delorean – Stay Close

Song of the Day – Tuesday 4/20/2010 DOM April 20, 2010

MizMuze’s ears are rangin’ from all the sangin’ at last night’s Vampire Weekend show.  Such a great show…but much too tired to write.  Must. Get. Sleep.

DOM or the band formerly known as FUR, are a three-piece indie pop/synth pop group from Worcester, Massachusetts.  The band says that they sound like “shit” on their MySpace page, but I think they’re being much too harsh.  In fact, I’d beg to differ. You can see for yourself if they’re really the self-described shiz when their debut EP, Sun Bronzed Greek Gods is released on 5/1/2010.

DOM – Burn Bridges

Song of the Day – Friday 4/16/2010 Fol Chen April 16, 2010

This synth-pop band from LA likes to keep secrets, especially their identity.  Fol Chen don’t appear in their videos and often show up in masks and makeup at their gigs.  The band believes “we sound like Prince with Amon Duul II and a children’s religious revival, not to mention Hot Chip, Pink Floyd, Gwen Stefani, Pere Ubu, Danielson Famile, Scritti Politti, Boards Of Canada, The Blow, and Pulp. (Mostly). We are cryptic and joyful and we would like you to dance.”

You can see Fol Chen’s secret unfold when they open up for Liars on 4/27/2010 at Slim’s in San Francisco.

Fol Chen – No Wedding Cake
