So another year of SXSW is here, and another year MizMuze isn’t there…sad.  But I’m gonna try and feature a few of the bands I’d see if I was there…

LA-based GROUPLOVE will play at SXSW and then head directly to SF for their show at The Independent on 3/23/2011…

Song of the Day – Friday 3/19/2010 Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings (SXSW) March 19, 2010

Sharon Jones and her nine-piece Brooklyn band have re-created the funk/soul sounds of Motown and Stax Records so authentically that you’ll swear it’s 1965.

Today, Sharon and The Dap-Kings will be sharing Spin Magazine’s SXSW mainstage with Hole (that’s right, Courtney Love and her newly re-formed band will be making their U.S. debut) Miike Snow, and Rogue Wave—now that’s a motley crew of a line-up that I’d love to see!

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings’ new album, I Learned the Hard Way drops on 4/6/2010…

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings will hit the Bay Area on 6/25/2010 at The Warfield.  Visit their website to download a free MP3 of their new song, ‘I’ve Learned the Hard Way.’

Song of the Day – Thursday 3/18/2010 Alex Chilton/Big Star March 18, 2010

Today’s ‘Song of the Day’ is in honor of Alex Chilton who passed away yesterday at a hospital in New Orleans due to a possible heart attack at age 59.

Chilton was best known for his work with the Box Tops and Big Star and had influenced many artists including R.E.M., Wilco, Jeff Buckley, Yo La Tengo, Cheap Trick, Teenage Fan Club, Elliot Smith, and The Replacements.

A reunited Big Star was scheduled to perform at this year’s SXSW Festival this Saturday.  SXSW Creative Director Brent Grulke issued a statement:

“Alex Chilton always messed with your head, charming and amazing you while doing so. His gift for melody was second to none, yet he frequently seemed in disdain of that gift. He seemed as troubled by neglect as he did by fame. He wrote the most accessible pop songs that turned into something quite sour on closer reflection. It was impossible to know what he was thinking. But it was always worth pondering, because that’s what a truly great artist makes us do. And make no mistake: Alex Chilton was an artist of the very highest caliber. It’s too early to do much but cry about our loss right now, but he’ll be missed, and missed more as the ages pass and his myth continues to expand – that music isn’t going anywhere. R.I.P. and thank you, friend.”

Song of the Day – Wednesday 3/17/2010 The Mighty Stef (SXSW/St Partrick’s Day) March 17, 2010

Happy St Patrick’s Day, and a Happy Opening Day of the SXSW Music Festival!  I’m gonna kill two birds with one stone, for lack of a better term, and feature one of the 20 Irish Acts participating in this year’s SXSW Festival.

Born Stefan Murphy, Dublin-based The Mighty Stef has been described as the love child of Jim Morrison, Shane MacGowan, Tom Waits, Billy Bragg, and Nick Cave…whoa, that’s a lot of baby-daddies, and those are some mighty big shoes for The Mighty Stef to fill.

The Mighty Stef – Downtown

The Mighty Stef’s latest release, 100 Midnights came out last year.

Song of the Day – Tuesday 3/16/2010 Fitz & the Tantrums (SXSW) March 16, 2010

How Fitz & the Tantrums went from playing shows in their living room, to playing packed stadiums in a matter of months is pure kismet.

The stadium bit is thanks to the fact that a tattoo artist happened to be playing Fitz et al, while lead singer for Maroon 5, Adam Levine was joining the cool kids and getting a tattoo.  Adam became an instant-fan and immediately asked Fitz and the gang to join them on tour.  After such serendipity (depending on how you feel about having to listen to Maroon 5 every night) Fitz & the Tantrums were able to bring their unique brand of neo-soul/indie pop to thousands of M5 fans, many of whom have probably never even heard of Motown.

The LA-based band is fronted by Michael Fitzpatrick and beautifully backed by vocalist Noelle Scaggs, and is armed with horns, a keyboardist, drums, and a bass player, yet there is not a single guitar to be found amongst the lot.  But you won’t miss the six-strings once you hear them, and they are sure to get some souls struttin’ at this year’s SXSW…

Fitz & the Tantrums – Breakin’ the Chains of Love (Live)

Fitz & the Tantrums debut EP “Songs for a Break Up Volume 1” was released last year recorded entirely in Fitz’s living room using a single microphone.  They are currently working on a full-length album and are sure to have a new fan-base after SXSW:

Song of the Day – Monday 3/15/2010 jj (SXSW) March 15, 2010

Continuing this week with MizMuze’s SXSW must-see bands, MizMuze presents: jj.

Shrouded in secrecy and mystery, Swedish duo, jj would not release their names or picture for all of 2009.  Instead, they released their debut single titled “jj no. 1” and four months later a full-length album cleverly titled “jj no.2” with a picture of a blood-spattered pot leaf on the cover.

In 2010, jj released their second full-length album on 3/9/2010, titled, you guessed it, “jj no. 3” and have also revealed their names (Joakim Benon and Elin Kastlander) and even a video.  You may notice a theme with this enigmatic duo, and that is: blood. In fact, the band’s website is selling a jj t-shirt spattered in band member, Joakim Benon’s blood (sorry everyone, bloody t-shirts are now sold out, but watch the video if you wanna see Joakim’s bloodletting)…

jj – Let Go

After SXSW, you can catch the sanguine duo as jj will make their way to the Bay Area hitting Bottom of the Hill on 4/16/2010:
