Song of the Day – Friday 12/2/2010 Freedom or Death December 3, 2010

Toronto duo Steve Fernandez and Sway, aka Freedom or Death, have been involved in the Canadian music world for the past 20 years as DJ’s, music teachers, and as past employees for Sony’s music label.

Their time spent at a major label gave the two working-knowledge of how the music industry treats their musicians and oftentimes stifles their creativity.  Those lessons inspired the group’s name which comes from the Greek War For Independence where the battle cry was “Freedom or Death.”  As an unsigned band, the group “have the freedom to make the music and the artistic choices that they want” but the true test will come when the labels come a knockin’…

British soul singer, Jamie Lidell has released his latest album, Compass on 5/18/2010 on Warp Records. Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor helped produced Lidell’s album as well as Twin Shadow‘s debut album so it’s no wonder that the two are teaming up and will both perform at Bimbo’s in San Francisco on 10/1/2010

Goodie Mob/Gnarls Barkley singer, songwriter, rapper, producer extraordinaire, Cee-Lo Green has another hit on his hands.  His soulful “Fuck You” is a middle-finger shout-out to his ex-girl and her new beau, and while you may think it’s gonna be an angry dis, this song is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and make you feel better about your day…you’re gonna wanna play it over and over until you get sick of it or until it makes you go “Crazy”…

The single dropped on YouTube a little over a week ago and has gone mega-viral (but something tells me this is gonna need a radio edit if it’s ever gonna hit the airwaves).  The new album, The Lady Killer is scheduled for release on 12/7/2010.  You can download the single here

9/1/2010 UPDATE:  Cee-Lo just dropped the official vid today:

You can still see the placeholder vid here (both are equally good):

Song of the Day – Wednesday 7/28/2010 The Roots July 28, 2010

Hip hop legends, The Roots released their ninth studio album, How I Got Over on 6/22/2010.  The single, “The Fire” features John Legend on the hook and the video was directed by Rik Cordero who explains the premise for the video:

“It chronicles a post-apocalyptic death march set in 1945 during the final stages of World War II in Europe.  After a cataclysmic event renders the war futile, a paramilitary splinter group, led by a Kurtz-like figure known as The Commodore, forces the transfer of young men who will be used as labor…and food.  The last survivor of the march receives a mysterious White Box which holds the key to survival.”

Song of the Day – Wednesday 5/26/2010 Bettye LaVette May 26, 2010

Detroit soul sista, Bettye LaVette released her first record nearly 50 years ago, but has only recently received widespread acclaim since releasing her 2005 record, I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise.

In 2008, when Miz LaVette performed The Who‘s “Love Reign o’er Me” at the Kennedy Center where Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey were receiving Kennedy Center Honors, Pete was so moved that he told Miz LaVette, “you made me weep.”  Thus the idea of a full-length album covering British rock songs was born.

Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook was released yesterday…Miz LaVette covers The Who, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Elton John and many more.  You can see The Great Lady of Soul herself when she performs one night at the Great American Music Hall on 7/14/2010.

Song of the Day – Wednesday 4/21/2010 Guru April 21, 2010

After learning of Guru’s passing on 4/19/2010, I’ve been playing my Jazzmatazz CD’s all night…I had forgotten how talented the G-U-R-U was.  Truly an under-appreciated, iconic, and legendary rapper.

Off of the Jazzmatazz, Vol. 3: Streetsoul album, Guru brings the rap and Angie Stone brings the soul…

Song of the Day – Wednesday 3/31/2010 The Mumlers March 31, 2010

MizMuze was at The Morning Benders’ show last night at The Independent, and she and the audience were in for a treat as The Mumlers were the opening act.  These local boys make good, smart music.

The San Jose six-piece band defies categorization, with their mix of guitars, accordions, clarinets, french horns, tubas, and stand-up bass they meld blues, jazz, soul, and folk that sound ancient and modern at the same time.  If you get a chance to see them live and alive (not in zombie form like the video below) do so, you won’t be disappointed.  And like their namesake William Mumler, a 19th century photographer who told customers he could capture the images of their deceased loved ones, they may just capture your soul.

The Mumlers latest album, Don’t Throw Me Away was released last year.
