Song of the Day – Tuesday 12/21/2010 Psychic Powers December 21, 2010

Psychic Powers are Nik Brinkman (Over the Atlantic) and Alejandro Cohen (Lanquis) who met in LA in 2007 and created their songs through internet jam sessions as Nik was home in New Zealand.  In early 2010 they met again and completed their debut album, Infinity which is scheduled to be released this month.

Drawing on influences from labels such as 4AD, Flying Nun, Sarah and Creation Records, the duo blends electronic pop music reminiscent of the 90′s, but with a totally modern twist…

Song of the Day – Monday 12/20/2010 Young Prisms December 20, 2010

San Francisco psychedelic/shoegazing/garage/beach-pop quintet Young Prisms are preparing for the January 18 release of their debut full-length Friends For Now on Kanine Records who have described the Young Prisms’ sound as “this music will make you want to drop acid and become a recluse. Or it will make you even less excited to work your shitty day job. Or it will make you jump up and down in a dark crowded room while your eardrums bleed. Or it will make you feel something secret like happiness, minus any sentimental whimsicality. Or it will make you want to read Sarte, or graphic comic books, or maybe Hunter Thompson. And in one hundred years when people want to know what it felt like to be young on the West Coast in the early new millennium, they might just put on this record, by these rising kings (and queen) of Psychedelic Slackerdom.”

The single “These Days” was released as a 7″ split with Mathemagic on Atelier Ciseaux.

Check out Young Prisms when they hit the stage at Bottom of the Hill on 1/19/2011…

Song of the Day – Friday 12/2/2010 Freedom or Death December 3, 2010

Toronto duo Steve Fernandez and Sway, aka Freedom or Death, have been involved in the Canadian music world for the past 20 years as DJ’s, music teachers, and as past employees for Sony’s music label.

Their time spent at a major label gave the two working-knowledge of how the music industry treats their musicians and oftentimes stifles their creativity.  Those lessons inspired the group’s name which comes from the Greek War For Independence where the battle cry was “Freedom or Death.”  As an unsigned band, the group “have the freedom to make the music and the artistic choices that they want” but the true test will come when the labels come a knockin’…

The band’s debut album, Sports was released on 11/9/2010 on Slumberland Records who describe the album as “one of the most assured debuts in recent memory, full of rumbling rhythms, layers of LOUD guitars and most of all great songs that pay special attention to texture and atmosphere, and leaven even the most riotous moments with unexpected shards of melody.”

Song of the Day – Friday 11/5/2010 Candy Claws November 5, 2010

Colorado’s Candy Claws, have released their new album, Hidden Lands on  Two Syllable Records on 8/3/2010.  Their record label describes Candy Claws’ unique style of recording:

“Each song on Hidden Lands contains a sample of every other song on the album.  They’d used this technique on previous releases, but this time around it happens throughout the whole album, creating a very cohesive listening experience.  Sometimes you’ll be able to recognize a bit of a song within another, but perhaps more interesting are the references only your subconscious will catch.  Without you noticing, your mind (and maybe your heart!) will make the connections, bridging the bridge of one song to the intro of another, taking in the album as a whole, just like albums should be.”

Let Candy Claws sink their claws into you on 11/11/2010 when they hit the stage at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco.

Wild Nothing is the solo project from Virginia’s Jack Tatum, who has gone from a one-man recording project, to a full four-piece touring band.

Tatum explains the difference between recording the album by himself to touring as a band: “In a lot of ways you lose a lot of stuff, but you gain a certain amount of energy that wasn’t there on the recording.  Live, we’ve kind of run into more of a rock band, if that makes any sense.  There’s that general energy about it, where it’s the live drums and everything is just a little louder and faster.  And it has a different feel, which I think is good.  At least for me, when I see a live band, it’s nice if everything is happening and all the instruments are being played right there.”  Wild Nothing played Popscene in September, but are sure to head back to the Bay very soon…

Wild Nothing’s debut album, Gemini was released on 5/25/2010 and has drawn comparisons to the Eighties Elite: Johnny Marr, The Cure, New Order and the Cocteau Twins…
