Today’s SOTD is dedicated to Tom Waits who was inducted into the Rock and  Roll Hall of Fame on Wednesday 12/15/2010.

After learning of his nomination Waits stated, “I am still recovering from the news. I never really cared about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame…but now I am surprised to discover how much I DO care.”

Song of the Day – Wednesday 7/28/2010 The Roots July 28, 2010

Hip hop legends, The Roots released their ninth studio album, How I Got Over on 6/22/2010.  The single, “The Fire” features John Legend on the hook and the video was directed by Rik Cordero who explains the premise for the video:

“It chronicles a post-apocalyptic death march set in 1945 during the final stages of World War II in Europe.  After a cataclysmic event renders the war futile, a paramilitary splinter group, led by a Kurtz-like figure known as The Commodore, forces the transfer of young men who will be used as labor…and food.  The last survivor of the march receives a mysterious White Box which holds the key to survival.”

Song of the Day – Tuesday 6/1/2010 Tame Impala June 1, 2010

Psychedelic rockers, Tame Impala, are an Aussie three-piece that have been compared to Cream and Colour Haze, but are self-described as “a steady flowing psychedelic groove rock band that emphasizes dream-like melody.”

Currently on tour with MGMT, Tame Impala’s new album, Innerspeaker is scheduled for release on 6/8/2010.

Song of the Day – Wednesday 5/26/2010 Bettye LaVette May 26, 2010

Detroit soul sista, Bettye LaVette released her first record nearly 50 years ago, but has only recently received widespread acclaim since releasing her 2005 record, I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise.

In 2008, when Miz LaVette performed The Who‘s “Love Reign o’er Me” at the Kennedy Center where Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey were receiving Kennedy Center Honors, Pete was so moved that he told Miz LaVette, “you made me weep.”  Thus the idea of a full-length album covering British rock songs was born.

Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook was released yesterday…Miz LaVette covers The Who, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Elton John and many more.  You can see The Great Lady of Soul herself when she performs one night at the Great American Music Hall on 7/14/2010.

Song of the Day – Monday 5/3/2010 Cass McCombs May 3, 2010

East Bay folk/alt country rocker, Cass McCombs was born and raised in Concord and is now based in LA.  McCombs fourth album, Catacombs was released last year, and was written as a tribute to his wife.  His song, “Dreams Come True Girl” features Academy Award nominated actress, Karen Black of Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, and Nashville fame singing like a true dreams come true seductress.  The song almost appears to be an updated version of The Everly Brothers, “All I Have to Do is Dream” except this time boy gets the girl of his dreams…

Song of the Day – Thursday 3/18/2010 Alex Chilton/Big Star March 18, 2010

Today’s ‘Song of the Day’ is in honor of Alex Chilton who passed away yesterday at a hospital in New Orleans due to a possible heart attack at age 59.

Chilton was best known for his work with the Box Tops and Big Star and had influenced many artists including R.E.M., Wilco, Jeff Buckley, Yo La Tengo, Cheap Trick, Teenage Fan Club, Elliot Smith, and The Replacements.

A reunited Big Star was scheduled to perform at this year’s SXSW Festival this Saturday.  SXSW Creative Director Brent Grulke issued a statement:

“Alex Chilton always messed with your head, charming and amazing you while doing so. His gift for melody was second to none, yet he frequently seemed in disdain of that gift. He seemed as troubled by neglect as he did by fame. He wrote the most accessible pop songs that turned into something quite sour on closer reflection. It was impossible to know what he was thinking. But it was always worth pondering, because that’s what a truly great artist makes us do. And make no mistake: Alex Chilton was an artist of the very highest caliber. It’s too early to do much but cry about our loss right now, but he’ll be missed, and missed more as the ages pass and his myth continues to expand – that music isn’t going anywhere. R.I.P. and thank you, friend.”
