Inspiring the masses, one post at a time.

Song of the Day – Tuesday 12/28/2010 White Denim December 28, 2010

Sorry MizMuzers…I’ve been trying to write today’s and yesterday’s posts via my iPhone as Big Brother has blocked access to all social networking, blogs, merchant sites, and anything fun at my day job.  Please forgive any missing links, mislabeled pictures, incorrect info—basically, the post below may be total bollocks…

White Denim is a four-piece hailing from Austin, Texas.  Their music draws influence from dub, psychedelic rock, blues, punk rock, progressive rock, soul, jazz, experimental rock with home-based recording, jamming approach, intense looping work and unusual song structures…

You can download the band’s latest LP, Last Day of Summer on their official website for FREE here!

Song of the Day – Wednesday 12/22/2010 Captain Beefheart December 22, 2010

Today’s SOTD is dedicated to Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart who passed away on Friday…

Don Van Vliet was an American musician and visual artist best known by the stage name Captain Beefheart.  The LAist stated: “Trying to explain the world of Captain Beefheart to the uninitiated is a fruitless task. The music that Don Van Vliet and his shifting crew of dedicated accomplices known as the Magic Band unleashed between 1965 and 1982 defies description and confounds any attempts at drawing a comparison. The phrase “Beefheart-like” has come to be used as shorthand by music writers trying to describe any old thing with a bent toward oddball beats and dissonant chords, but it’s impossible to get a sense of what Beefheart is about by listening to any or all of the bands trying to live up to that description.”

Song of the Day – Friday 8/6/2010 Blonde Redhead August 6, 2010

Blonde Redhead are a New York (by way of Japan, Canada, and Italy) indie rock trio fronted by Kazu Makino and twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace.   The band performs in several languages including English, Japanese, Italian, and French and have been compared to Sonic Youth.

Their upcoming album, Penny Sparkle is set to be released on 9/14/2010.  Lead vocalist, Kazu Makino had this to say about the album:

“I fell in love with the music like falling for someone you’ve known for a long time.  It was dreamy and sometimes was very stormy.  At times I felt like a shepherd who was trying to herd five stallions into a yard (unsuccessfully).  I felt like I was a link to everyone.  I remained still and the others were constantly moving around it.  I am not sure what Penny Sparkle is but I hope I offered to them as much as they offered me.  I know that we have never made a record this way and if I could go back in time, I would do it exactly the same way again.”

You can download the single, “Here Sometimes” here.

Blonde Redhead will head to the Bay Area on 11/19/2010 at the Warfield…

Song of the Day – Tuesday 6/29/2010 Mates of State and Girls June 29, 2010

MizMuze is bringing you a 2fer Tuesday with Mates of State and Girls!

Husband and wife team, Mates of State, released their sixth album, Crushes (The Covers Mixtape) on 6/15/2010.  The album is obviously cover songs and the band explains why they choose to make a covers album: “We’ve been talking about doing a covers record for a long time. We’d hear a great song at 2 AM while driving the straight line from one part of Texas to the next, and all we’d want to do is play that song as if we had written it.”

Mates of State cover everyone from The Mars Volta, Belle & Sebastian, Death Cab for Cutie, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Fleetwood Mac, Vashti Bunyan, Dear Nora, Daniel Johnston, and San Francisco’s Girls with their version of “Laura.”

Mates of State will be performing two nights at the Great American Music Hall…tomorrow 6/30 and Thursday 7/1…

Mates of State – Laura

Below is the original song “Laura” from San Francisco indie rockers, Girls, whose debut album, Album received a 9.1 on Pitchfork and earned the #5 spot on Spin Magazine’s best album of 2009 list.

Song of the Day – Tuesday 6/1/2010 Tame Impala June 1, 2010

Psychedelic rockers, Tame Impala, are an Aussie three-piece that have been compared to Cream and Colour Haze, but are self-described as “a steady flowing psychedelic groove rock band that emphasizes dream-like melody.”

Currently on tour with MGMT, Tame Impala’s new album, Innerspeaker is scheduled for release on 6/8/2010.

Song of the Day – Wednesday 5/5/2010 Bear in Heaven May 5, 2010

¡Hola! Happy Cinco de Mayo!

So what does Brooklyn-based indie-rockers, Bear in Heaven have to do with Mexico’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla?  Nothing.  But their second album, Beast Rest Fourth Mouth is a play on the 4 main navigational directions, East West North South…so let’s celebrate the 5th of May with the 4 directions (OK, it’s a stretch, but hopefully you’ve had too many cervezas to care).

Bear in Heaven will leave New York and head Rest performing at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco on 7/26/2010 with Twin Sister (tomorrow’s SOTD).
