Song of the Day – Thursday 4/29/2010 Local Natives April 29, 2010

What would you get if a Fleet Fox and a Grizzly Bear mated?  No, not a Jackalope or a Liger (“bred for its skills in magic”) or even a Tiglon (look it up).  You’d get Local Natives, the LA quintet that combines Fleet Foxes’ folksy three-part harmonies with Grizzly Bear’s psych folk.

Local Natives debut album, Gorilla Manor dropped on 2/16/2010 and the band will be playing two back-to-back gigs in San Francisco.  On 6/2/2010 the band will play at the Rickshaw Stop, and on 6/3/2010 they’ll play at Bottom of the Hill.

Song of the Day – Tuesday 4/6/2010 The Smith Westerns April 6, 2010

Perhaps we can call this Windy City four-piece, Teen Rex, as they are all between the ages of 17-19 and borrow heavily from T. Rex and Marc Bolan.

But instead, they chose the name The Smith Westerns and as 19-year-old lead singer, Cullen Omori explains it, the name came about as a pun-gone-wrong:  “I kind of messed up like a play on words, but in time it’s gotten meaning.  You know like Smith like Morrisey, you know the Smiths and then you know like the Sex Pistols.  So we are like a punk band like the Sex Pistols in the same way that we use gun, but also you know sweet and accessible like Morrisey.”

Either way The Smith Westerns have channeled the rock gods of 1960’s/1970’s past, to create a self-titled album about girls, love, and their ever-fleeting youth.

Song of the Day – Monday 3/8/2010 Sparklehorse March 8, 2010

Today’s SOTD is in honor of Mark Linkous, lead singer of Sparklehorse who committed suicide on Saturday 3/6/2010.   Linkous had also worked as a record producer and had collaborated with Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Daniel Johnston, Danger Mouse, and David Lynch.  This was not Linkous’s first brush with death, in 1996 Linkous almost died after taking a dangerous mix of valium and anti-depressants.  Linkous was 47 when he passed.  On the Sparklehorse website the Linkous family posted: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today. We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts. May his journey be peaceful, happy and free. There’s a heaven and there’s a star for you.” – March 6, 2010
