San Francisco’s The Soft Moon is Luis Vasquez, a one-man post punk band “raised under the burning sun of the Mojave desert, Vasquez channels both his punk upbringing and Afro-Cuban heritage to sculpt decidedly dystopian soundscapes for a new generation of torn romantics. It’s a record set somewhere in the near post-apocalypse where technology enchants as much as itdestroys.”

The Soft Moon’s debut self-titled album was released on Captured Tracks. Download the single, “Tiny Spiders” for FREE here!

Song of the Day – Wednesday 12/1/2010 These New Puritans December 1, 2010

So NME came out with their Top Ten of 2010 on Monday (guess the Brits are sure that December will not yield any contenders…Hello?!  What about Daft Punk’s and Jessica Simpson’s albums that are scheduled to drop next week?!).  Who do you think made number one?  Drumroll please…

Congratulations British art rockers, These New Puritans, you’re album Hidden just made NME’s number one!!!  You beat out MizMuze’s top-three contenders for the number one spot.  Spoiler alert: Beach House, Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem will most likely be my number one—but stay tuned, a dark horse (or deer) may just take the lead.

So what are your favorite albums of 2010?

Yawwwn…stretch.  What’s going on?!  Am I still in a turkey-coma or am I having my favorite John Hughes dream?   You know what dream I’m talking about: It’s 1986, and I’m driving around in my pink Karmann Ghia, hanging out with Duckie and listening to The Smiths, New Order, and OMD!  I love that dream.

Wake up!  OMG, it’s 2010 and OMD has released a new record!!!

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark released their 11th studio album, History of Modern on 9/28/2010 which is their first album since 1996, and the first album featuring the classic 4-piece line-up since 1986’s The Pacific Age

So go on, download the new album, transfer it to cassette, and let’s drive on over to TRAX and kick Steff’s preppy little ass!

Song of the Day – Thursday 9/23/2010 The Hundred in the Hands September 23, 2010

Jason Friedman and Eleanore Everdell make up the Brooklyn-based dance pop duo The Hundred in the Hands.  Their label states that they were “named after the phrase the Lakota Nation gave to the Fetterman Battle/Massacre of 1866 in Wyoming — in which Crazy Horse led his warriors to a victory that resulted in the death of 100 white soldiers — the Hundred in the Hands fuses synth pop with post-punk and dream pop elements, making for a sound that’s equally danceable and dreamy.”

Their self-titled debut dropped on 9/21/2010 and includes the track “Pigeons”…the video features a chick who’s had more than one-too-many, which results in an extreme case of acid reflux — we’re talking fireworks and explosions.  I’ll have what she’s drinking.

See The Hundred in the Hands on 10/21/2010 at Popscene’s 330 Ritch…

Liverpool’s Clinic, the surgically-masked mad scientists/post-punk revivalists are about to release their new album, Bubblegum on 10/4/2010.  Best known for their fast-paced, vintage sound, their new album (according to their website) does away with the old: “In place of churning riffs and wired vocals is a dream state of harpsichords, dulcimers and strings.  Melody and softness combine with the band’s unique internal logic to produce a record of pop beauty.”  Cool.

You can see Clinic operate when they hit the stage at The Independent in San Francisco on 11/19/2010…
