Song of the Day – Wednesday 02.02.2011 Braids February 2, 2011

Braids are a Canadian four-piece that mix experimental pop with neo-psychedelia and have been described by the New York Times as a band that “makes dreamy songs that fly with real velocity, a combination made possible by the band’s moving in so many directions at once.”

The band’s debut album, Native Speaker was released on 1.18.2011…see them at the Rickshaw Stop on 5.4.2011 when they open up for Baths…

Song of the Day – Thursday 11/18/2010 Tapes ‘n Tapes November 18, 2010

Minnesota indie rockers, Tapes ‘n Tapes are Josh Grier on guitar and lead vocals, Matt Kretzmann on keys and horns, Erik Appelwick on bass guitar and backing vocals, and Jeremy Hanson on percussion.  The band’s third album, Outside will hit stores on 1/11/2011 and will be released on their very own label, Ibid Records

Josh Grier states, “We weren’t worried about if our label thought the mix was right for radio.  We weren’t making a record that a label was going to own.  We were just making a record for ourselves.  We feel very fortunate that we got to make it the way we wanted with such a great group of people.  We can’t wait for people to hear the record.”

Well if you can’t wait to see Tapes ‘n Tapes when they sing ‘n sing in front of a live audience, then you can catch them at Bottom of the Hill on 3/11/2011…

Song of the Day – Friday 10/15/2010 Holy F**k October 15, 2010

Are cats the new dogs this year?  At least on the indie music scene, it appears that featuring felines on everything from  album covers, twitter, and music videos is the thing to do.

Who knew that it would ever be cool to call yourself “The Cat Lady,” but that’s Bethany, of Best Coast‘s nickname, and she and her boyfriend, Nathan Williams of Wavves tweet about her cat “Snacks” almost as much as much as they do about weed.

Check out Holy F**k‘s new video for “Red Lights” off the band’s third album, Latin, which is a bit like Dragnet meets Toonces…

You can catch Holy F**k this weekend at the Treasure Island Music Festival on 10/16/2010…

Song of the Day – Thursday 9/16/2010 The Flaming Lips September 16, 2010

Let’s dial it back to 1993 when Wayne Coyne, lead singer of The Flaming Lips didn’t look so much like Richard Branson, but rather had a shock of bright orange hair and sang songs about girls who thought of ghosts and made sandwiches with vaseline, and boys who blew their noses into magazines.

See The Flaming Lips and Ariel Pink on 10/1/2010 and 10/2/2010 at the Fox Theater in Oakland…

Song of the Day – Wednesday 4/28/2010 Portugal. The Man April 28, 2010

See, not everything coming out of Wasilla, Alaska is pure-evil.  In fact, unlike the bespectacled rogue she-devil, indie rockers, Portugal. The Man are quite cool; and smart enough to know that they had to get the hell out of Wasilla to stay cool.

Here to explain why Portugal. The Man has a period in between their name is vocalist John Gourley, “A country is a group of people.  With Portugal, it just ended up being the first country that came to mind. The band’s name is ‘Portugal’. The period is stating that, and ‘The Man’ states that it’s just one person.”  Ummm, OK?

The bands’ fifth album, American Ghetto, was released last month.  Catch Portugal. The Man perform at Fillmore. The Auditorium on 6/18/2010.
