What do Ziggy Stardust, Sasha Fierce, and Diamond Rings have in common?  They are the alter-egos of David Bowie, Beyonce Knowles, and John O’Regan.  What, you’ve never heard of John O’Regan?  Well, in Toronto he’s known as the lead singer of indie rock group, D’Urbervilles.

It appears that John O is playing up the whole “girls who are boys/who like boys to be girls” scene, and working it to his advantage.  In fact, his debut album, Special Affections was released last month with Pitchfork giving the album an 8.2 stating, “The fact that O’Regan never lets on whether he’s singing to a boy or a girl further emphasizes its universal applications.”  Marketing genius.

So Girls and Boys, get your rainbow eyeshadow on and head over to Popscene on Thanksgiving on 11/25/10 and see Diamond Rings in action…he may just dedicate a song to you.

If you saw the season finale of Eastbound & Down this past Sunday, then not only were you watching the funniest show on television, you would have also heard Philly indie rocker, Kurt Vile‘s single “He’s Alright” off his 2009 album, Childish Prodigy during the final scene.  MizMuze can’t wait for the return of Kenny Powers and his curly mullet next season…

Kurt Vile & The Violators co-headlined with The Soft Pack last night at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco.

Song of the Day – Tuesday 11/9/2010 Crocodiles November 9, 2010

Crocodiles are an indie rock/noise pop duo from San Diego, CA.  They have been compared to the Jesus and Mary Chain, Echo & The Bunnymen, and the Velvet Underground.

Their second album, Sleep Forever was released on 9/14/2010…

Chicago dream pop duo, Houses are boyfriend/girlfriend, Dexter Tortoriell and Megan Messina. After Dexter was laid off, he and Megan moved to Hawaii into a cabin that did not have electricity, gas, or plumbing.  During the day they worked for meals by learning  to cultivate microorganisms, and at night they would record music and paint.

Dexter states, “The music comes from a place of love and ease.”  But apparently, man can’t live on love alone, so once the two went broke, they moved back to Chicago and released their first album.

The band’s debut album, All Night dropped on 10/19/2010 on Lefse Records.

Song of the Day – Thursday 10/7/2010 Shimmering Stars October 7, 2010

Canada’s guitar pop group, Shimmering Stars describe themselves as “sexually repressed and puritanically correct. But they are eager to share some of their nasty thoughts with you. Not that they feel good about it!”  With the Everly Brothers and Del Shannon listed as influences, MizMuze says: “Bring it on!”

They recently released It’s Just as Well on cassette at Trivial Pursuit.

If the lo-fi/retro sound of Guards sounds familiar, it may be because Richie Follin (who is the sole entity of Guards) and his sister, Madeline Follin share similar taste in music.  Madeline happens to be in the indie pop band Cults, and she and her brother both like to keep their shiz on the DL — neither band has a myspace page, and there’s not a lot of info about the bands floating around in cyberspace.

Guards’ debut EP will be released as a limited edition 12″ on 11/22/2010, but you can download all seven songs for FREE here.  The EP includes the single, “Trophy Queen” and features Caroline Polachek of Chairlift and sounds a bit like Tennis.

Song of the Day – Monday 9/27/2010 How to Dress Well September 27, 2010

The enigmatic How to Dress Well, is Tom Krell: a philosophy research fellow living in Cologne, Germany by day, and a self-made lo-fi indie artist by night.  With his love of 80’s and 90’s R&B, Krell has created homemade slow-jams mixing in his falsetto over distorted reverb.

Sampling Michael Jackson’s “Baby Be Mine,” the 7″ “Ecstasy With Jo Jo” b/w “Take it On” is available on Transparent Records.  HTDW’s debut LP, Love Remains dropped on 9/21/2010…
