Song of the Day – Wednesday 12/22/2010 Captain Beefheart December 22, 2010

Today’s SOTD is dedicated to Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart who passed away on Friday…

Don Van Vliet was an American musician and visual artist best known by the stage name Captain Beefheart.  The LAist stated: “Trying to explain the world of Captain Beefheart to the uninitiated is a fruitless task. The music that Don Van Vliet and his shifting crew of dedicated accomplices known as the Magic Band unleashed between 1965 and 1982 defies description and confounds any attempts at drawing a comparison. The phrase “Beefheart-like” has come to be used as shorthand by music writers trying to describe any old thing with a bent toward oddball beats and dissonant chords, but it’s impossible to get a sense of what Beefheart is about by listening to any or all of the bands trying to live up to that description.”

Today’s SOTD is dedicated to Tom Waits who was inducted into the Rock and  Roll Hall of Fame on Wednesday 12/15/2010.

After learning of his nomination Waits stated, “I am still recovering from the news. I never really cared about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame…but now I am surprised to discover how much I DO care.”

Song of the Day – Tuesday 12/7/2010 PJ Harvey December 7, 2010

PJ Harvey will release her eighth album, Let England Shake which is scheduled for release on 2/14/2011 in the UK and on 2/15/2011 in the US.  She made the following statement to the BBC regarding her new album:

“I think a lot of my work has often been about the interior, the emotional, what happens inside oneself.  This time I’ve just been looking out, so it’s not only to do with taking a look at England, but taking a look at the world and what’s happening in the current day world affairs.  But always trying to come from the human point of view because I don’t feel qualified to sing from a political standpoint.”

Miz Polly Jean will embark on a mini-European Tour (which is already sold out) in February, and will hit the festival circuit this Summer…

Song of the Day – Friday 10/15/2010 Holy F**k October 15, 2010

Are cats the new dogs this year?  At least on the indie music scene, it appears that featuring felines on everything from  album covers, twitter, and music videos is the thing to do.

Who knew that it would ever be cool to call yourself “The Cat Lady,” but that’s Bethany, of Best Coast‘s nickname, and she and her boyfriend, Nathan Williams of Wavves tweet about her cat “Snacks” almost as much as much as they do about weed.

Check out Holy F**k‘s new video for “Red Lights” off the band’s third album, Latin, which is a bit like Dragnet meets Toonces…

You can catch Holy F**k this weekend at the Treasure Island Music Festival on 10/16/2010…

Song of the Day – Thursday 9/16/2010 The Flaming Lips September 16, 2010

Let’s dial it back to 1993 when Wayne Coyne, lead singer of The Flaming Lips didn’t look so much like Richard Branson, but rather had a shock of bright orange hair and sang songs about girls who thought of ghosts and made sandwiches with vaseline, and boys who blew their noses into magazines.

See The Flaming Lips and Ariel Pink on 10/1/2010 and 10/2/2010 at the Fox Theater in Oakland…
