Song of the Day – Friday 12/2/2010 Freedom or Death December 3, 2010

Toronto duo Steve Fernandez and Sway, aka Freedom or Death, have been involved in the Canadian music world for the past 20 years as DJ’s, music teachers, and as past employees for Sony’s music label.

Their time spent at a major label gave the two working-knowledge of how the music industry treats their musicians and oftentimes stifles their creativity.  Those lessons inspired the group’s name which comes from the Greek War For Independence where the battle cry was “Freedom or Death.”  As an unsigned band, the group “have the freedom to make the music and the artistic choices that they want” but the true test will come when the labels come a knockin’…

LA’s Cameron Mesirow aka Glasser, is one-woman-band, whose stage name was inspired by “a midnight vision of a figure hovering over water”.  Her debut full-length album, Ring was released on 9/28/2010, but you can download her single “Home” here!

See Glasser at Popscene in San Francsico on 11/4/2010…

It’s official: MizMuze has caught her first cold of the season.  But even with the sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head, fever, and needs to rest, I have mustered up enough strength to bring you the Song of the Day…

The King of Trip Hop, Tricky, released his ninth studio album, Mixed Race on 10/5/20/10 (on 9/27/2010 in the UK).  Tricky’s label, Domino Records describes the single “Murder Weapon” as “a reworking of the classic dancehall hit from Jamaican-born Echo Minott, originally released in the early ’90s.  Tricky fell in love with the track and was determined to hear how it would sound with a female vocalist (in a similar fashion to his reworking of “Black Steel” with Martina Topley-Bird).  Tricky here enrolls Irish-Italian Franky Riley, who has toured as Tricky’s vocalist for two years and makes her recording debut on his new album Mixed Race.”

Tricky will be rockin’ a rhyme that’s right on time at The Independent in San Francisco on 12/21/2010…

Song of the Day – Friday 10/15/2010 Holy F**k October 15, 2010

Are cats the new dogs this year?  At least on the indie music scene, it appears that featuring felines on everything from  album covers, twitter, and music videos is the thing to do.

Who knew that it would ever be cool to call yourself “The Cat Lady,” but that’s Bethany, of Best Coast‘s nickname, and she and her boyfriend, Nathan Williams of Wavves tweet about her cat “Snacks” almost as much as much as they do about weed.

Check out Holy F**k‘s new video for “Red Lights” off the band’s third album, Latin, which is a bit like Dragnet meets Toonces…

You can catch Holy F**k this weekend at the Treasure Island Music Festival on 10/16/2010…

British soul singer, Jamie Lidell has released his latest album, Compass on 5/18/2010 on Warp Records. Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor helped produced Lidell’s album as well as Twin Shadow‘s debut album so it’s no wonder that the two are teaming up and will both perform at Bimbo’s in San Francisco on 10/1/2010

Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, AKA  M.I.A., released the video for her latest single, “XXXO”off her third album, /\/\/\Y/\ (MAYA) yesterday.  The video was directed by Hype Williams and is a departure from her first single “Born Free” and a return to what Entertainment Weekly described as a “techno-tinged dance record…what we hoped for from our Sri Lankan anti-pop star.”

Song of the Day – Monday 7/19/2010 The Limousines July 19, 2010

MizMuze must be in a dream within a dream, because what else could explain the fact that so much good music is coming out of little ol’ San Ho lately.  Or maybe I’m in a third-level dream-state just like Leo in the new blockbuster, Inception (which MizMuze gives two spins of a top up!)

Whether it’s a dream or nightmare, there’s no doubt that indie music is finding its way to San Jose…

Today’s SOTD comes from San Jose electropop duo, The Limousines whose single “Very Busy People”  received national airplay and chart success last year.  Their debut album, Get Sharp will drop on 7/27/2010 via iTunes and Hot Topic…

Make sure to check out The Limousines when they chauffeur their way to the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco on 9/3/2010.

Song of the Day – Tuesday 5/25/2010 Lali Puna May 25, 2010

German indietronica four-piece, Lali Puna have just released their fourth studio album, Our Inventions last month.  Vocalist, Valerie Trebeljahr describes the making of their new LP:  “Our Inventions is less pushy than Faking the Books…We wanted to leave the guitars behind.  In fact, I would have loved to go into the dance direction, so some of the songs on Our Invention were four-on-the-floor.  But we didn’t succeed.  So we decided to throw away the dancefloor bassdrums and the songs turned out to be a lot more quiet.”

Dance songs aside, MizMuze thinks you’ll enjoy the lead track off their new album (their first in 6 years)…remember them…

Song of the Day – Wednesday 5/19/2010 Caribou May 19, 2010

Canada’s Dr. Dan Snaith formerly known as Manitoba, has dabbled in electronica, psychedelic pop, krautrock, and shoegaze all while completing his PhD in mathematics.  Now recording under the name Caribou, Snaith explains how he melds music and math: “I’m not interested in things in the real world as much as I am interested in mental ideas and mental contexts.  That’s why I did a PhD in Pure Maths, this elegance of pure ideas and things that are somewhat intangible and about ideas.  Music is very much like that, playing around with ideas and creating this aesthetic of sound.”

Caribou’s latest album, Swim was released last month…see Dr. Caribou live when he performs two nights at the Independent in San Francisco with Toro Y Moi on 5/23 and 5/24…
