Song of the Day – Wednesday 5/26/2010 Bettye LaVette May 26, 2010

Detroit soul sista, Bettye LaVette released her first record nearly 50 years ago, but has only recently received widespread acclaim since releasing her 2005 record, I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise.

In 2008, when Miz LaVette performed The Who‘s “Love Reign o’er Me” at the Kennedy Center where Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey were receiving Kennedy Center Honors, Pete was so moved that he told Miz LaVette, “you made me weep.”  Thus the idea of a full-length album covering British rock songs was born.

Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook was released yesterday…Miz LaVette covers The Who, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Elton John and many more.  You can see The Great Lady of Soul herself when she performs one night at the Great American Music Hall on 7/14/2010.

Song of the Day – Friday 4/2/2010 The Heavy April 2, 2010

“Hi, welcome to The Gap!”  That’s how it all started for guitarist Dan Taylor and lead singer Kelvin Swaby of The Heavy, who were both working at The Gap in Noid, England when they met and started the band.

Now a quartet, the British soul/funk/R&B indie rockers know how to bring the house down.  In fact, when they performed on the Late Show With David Letterman at the beginning of this year, Letterman was so impressed that he asked the band to play an encore—that was the first time in Late Show history that Letterman had ever asked a band to perform an encore on his show…not bad for a coupla dudes who bonded over neo-soul, Motown, cable knit sweaters and khakis—just cinch it!

See what all The Heavy hype is about when the band headlines at The Blank Club in San Jose on 6/24, and on 6/25 The Heavy will open up for Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings at The Warfield.

The Heavy – How You Like Me Now?

The band’s second LP, The House That Dirt Built was released last year.  Check out all their tour dates here:

MizMuze was at The Morning Benders’ show last night at The Independent, and she and the audience were in for a treat as The Mumlers were the opening act.  These local boys make good, smart music.

The San Jose six-piece band defies categorization, with their mix of guitars, accordions, clarinets, french horns, tubas, and stand-up bass they meld blues, jazz, soul, and folk that sound ancient and modern at the same time.  If you get a chance to see them live and alive (not in zombie form like the video below) do so, you won’t be disappointed.  And like their namesake William Mumler, a 19th century photographer who told customers he could capture the images of their deceased loved ones, they may just capture your soul.

The Mumlers latest album, Don’t Throw Me Away was released last year.
