Song of the Day – Thursday 11/18/2010 Tapes ‘n Tapes November 18, 2010

Minnesota indie rockers, Tapes ‘n Tapes are Josh Grier on guitar and lead vocals, Matt Kretzmann on keys and horns, Erik Appelwick on bass guitar and backing vocals, and Jeremy Hanson on percussion.  The band’s third album, Outside will hit stores on 1/11/2011 and will be released on their very own label, Ibid Records

Josh Grier states, “We weren’t worried about if our label thought the mix was right for radio.  We weren’t making a record that a label was going to own.  We were just making a record for ourselves.  We feel very fortunate that we got to make it the way we wanted with such a great group of people.  We can’t wait for people to hear the record.”

Well if you can’t wait to see Tapes ‘n Tapes when they sing ‘n sing in front of a live audience, then you can catch them at Bottom of the Hill on 3/11/2011…

It’s official: MizMuze has caught her first cold of the season.  But even with the sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head, fever, and needs to rest, I have mustered up enough strength to bring you the Song of the Day…

The King of Trip Hop, Tricky, released his ninth studio album, Mixed Race on 10/5/20/10 (on 9/27/2010 in the UK).  Tricky’s label, Domino Records describes the single “Murder Weapon” as “a reworking of the classic dancehall hit from Jamaican-born Echo Minott, originally released in the early ’90s.  Tricky fell in love with the track and was determined to hear how it would sound with a female vocalist (in a similar fashion to his reworking of “Black Steel” with Martina Topley-Bird).  Tricky here enrolls Irish-Italian Franky Riley, who has toured as Tricky’s vocalist for two years and makes her recording debut on his new album Mixed Race.”

Tricky will be rockin’ a rhyme that’s right on time at The Independent in San Francisco on 12/21/2010…

Song of the Day – Friday 7/2/2010 Admiral Radley July 2, 2010

Long time friends Jason Lytle and Aaron Burtch of Grandaddy, and Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray of Earlimart make up the indie rock band, Admiral Radley.

The abridged story behind the band’s name comes from a mysterious man the band met while visiting the Hammer Museum in LA.  The man (whose name was Admiral Radley) told the group, “I have to say that Earlidaddy is a terrible name, but nowhere near as dreadful as Grandimart.  I believe you should call yourselves Admiral Radley, and I believe you should go forth and play shows and spread your loose and enjoyable message.”  And so they have…

AdRad’s debut album, I Heart California is now available on iTunes and the CD and LP versions will be released on 7/13.  Download AdRad’s single “I Heart California” for free here.

You can have your very own Admiral Radley Sighting when the band and the man with the admiral’s cap appear at Bottom of the Hill on 7/23/2010.

Song of the Day – Thursday 6/17/2010 Yo La Tengo June 17, 2010

Hoboken, New Jersey’s indie rock legends, Yo La Tengo (Spanish for “I’ve Got It” which is a baseball reference) have been making music for over a quarter-century—that’s like a million light years in the indie rock world (if time was measured in distance).  The band released, Popular Songs, their 12th studio album, last year.

Yo La Tengo will be headlining this years Left Coast Live Festival (see next post to find out all the festival details) in San Jose on 6/26/2010…

Song of the Day – Wednesday 6/16/2010 DEVO June 16, 2010

It’s been 20 years since the last DEVO album was released…dang that seems like forever ago!  If memory serves correctly, MizMuze wasn’t even able to drink her Greek Muze Ouzo back in 1990 (legally, that is)!!!  But I do remember vividly when DEVO’s fantastic 1980 Freedom of Choice album came out…MizMuze was gettin’ her groove on to “Whip It” and dancing around in her kiddie toga…ahhh, good times.

DEVO’s ninth studio album, Something For Everybody dropped yesterday.  DEVO conducted a “Song Study” via an online survey to determine which of their 12 of 16 songs were to be included on the new album.  What that means is that you have the Freedom of Choice when deciding which of the three album versions to buy:  The Standard Version which is “88% focus group approved.”  The Song Study Version which is 100% focus group approved.  Or the Deluxe Version which includes all 16 songs plus four bonus tracks.
