Inspiring the masses, one post at a time.

Song of the Day – Monday 5/10/2010 Matt & Kim May 10, 2010

Sorry for the late SOTD, MizMuzers.  It’s been a busy morning and it’s gonna be a busy week (you know, day job, saving the planet etc.).  So, there may be a delay in getting out the SOTD in a timely fashion this week—please be patient and bear with me just for this week…

Gonna make this post short and sweet (a bit like MizMuze)…just a good band with a great vid…hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Matt & Kim are a power pop duo who met while they were both attending the Pratt Institue.  Their second album, Grand was released last year on the  Fader Label and this video for “Lessons Learned” won the award for breakthrough video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

Song of the Day – Friday 3/19/2010 Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings (SXSW) March 19, 2010

Sharon Jones and her nine-piece Brooklyn band have re-created the funk/soul sounds of Motown and Stax Records so authentically that you’ll swear it’s 1965.

Today, Sharon and The Dap-Kings will be sharing Spin Magazine’s SXSW mainstage with Hole (that’s right, Courtney Love and her newly re-formed band will be making their U.S. debut) Miike Snow, and Rogue Wave—now that’s a motley crew of a line-up that I’d love to see!

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings’ new album, I Learned the Hard Way drops on 4/6/2010…

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – 100 Days, 100 Nights

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings will hit the Bay Area on 6/25/2010 at The Warfield.  Visit their website to download a free MP3 of their new song, ‘I’ve Learned the Hard Way.’

Song of the Day – Tuesday 3/16/2010 Fitz & the Tantrums (SXSW) March 16, 2010

How Fitz & the Tantrums went from playing shows in their living room, to playing packed stadiums in a matter of months is pure kismet.

The stadium bit is thanks to the fact that a tattoo artist happened to be playing Fitz et al, while lead singer for Maroon 5, Adam Levine was joining the cool kids and getting a tattoo.  Adam became an instant-fan and immediately asked Fitz and the gang to join them on tour.  After such serendipity (depending on how you feel about having to listen to Maroon 5 every night) Fitz & the Tantrums were able to bring their unique brand of neo-soul/indie pop to thousands of M5 fans, many of whom have probably never even heard of Motown.

The LA-based band is fronted by Michael Fitzpatrick and beautifully backed by vocalist Noelle Scaggs, and is armed with horns, a keyboardist, drums, and a bass player, yet there is not a single guitar to be found amongst the lot.  But you won’t miss the six-strings once you hear them, and they are sure to get some souls struttin’ at this year’s SXSW…

Fitz & the Tantrums – Breakin’ the Chains of Love (Live)

Fitz & the Tantrums debut EP “Songs for a Break Up Volume 1” was released last year recorded entirely in Fitz’s living room using a single microphone.  They are currently working on a full-length album and are sure to have a new fan-base after SXSW:

Song of the Day – Friday 3/12/2010 Broken Bells (SXSW) March 12, 2010

The Shins frontman, James Mercer and artist/producer Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse, have joined forces to create the “melodic, but experimental” indie rock band, Broken Bells.  Broken Bells features Mercer on vocals, guitars and bass while Danger Mouse, plays organ, drums, piano, synths and bass…Broken Bells will perform opening night at SXSW…

Broken Bells – The High Road

Broken Bells’ self-titled album was released on 3/9/2010…the band are scheduled to announce a full tour after SXSW…

Song of the Day – Thursday 3/11/2010 Best Coast March 11, 2010

In one week (6 days to be exact) more than 1,800 bands from all over the world will converge on Austin, Texas from March 17-21 for the South by  Southwest Music Festival!  Sadly, MizMuze can’t leave her day job to attend this year’s SXSW…but, we can all be there in spirit as MizMuze will be featuring a must-see SXSW band for the SOTD for the next two weeks.

Today’s band, Best Coast are a duo from LA fronted by Bethany Cosentino who brings her breathy, muffled, lo-fi 60’s garage rock/surf pop sound to the SXSW scene.  Bethany describes Best Coast best as “songs about summer and the sun and the ocean and being a lazy creep with drums, beach boys’ bass lines, and other amazing things.”
