MizMuze Gets a Makeover June 30, 2010

For the past six months, MizMuze has endured snickers from several “friends” who dogged MizMuze’s generic avatar (which was always intended as a place-holder).  One such friend/chastiser happens to be the very talented illustrator, Jerrod Maruyama.

MizMuze and Jerrod go waaaay back…I’m talking all the way back to the days when we were just baby deities, running around Mount Olympus in our diapers and toddler togas, honing our talents in drawing and inspiring.  When I asked Jerrod to develop a MizMuze character, he jumped at the opportunity to help me “get rid of that ridiculous picture” I was using.  Well, after months of discussions, studio sessions, and late nights, Jerrod has finally captured the awesomeness of MizMuze!

I now present the new and improved MizMuze debut…

Song of the Day – Wednesday 6/30/2010 Magic Kids

One part Polyphonic spree, one part Phil Spector, and one huge helping of Brian Wilson and that’s the recipe for Memphis Tennessee’s Magic Kids.  Their debut album, Memphis will drop on 8/24/10.

The Magic Kids will be supporting Ariel Pink on 7/10/10 at Bimbo’s in San Francisco.

Song of the Day – Tuesday 6/29/2010 Mates of State and Girls June 29, 2010

MizMuze is bringing you a 2fer Tuesday with Mates of State and Girls!

Husband and wife team, Mates of State, released their sixth album, Crushes (The Covers Mixtape) on 6/15/2010.  The album is obviously cover songs and the band explains why they choose to make a covers album: “We’ve been talking about doing a covers record for a long time. We’d hear a great song at 2 AM while driving the straight line from one part of Texas to the next, and all we’d want to do is play that song as if we had written it.”

Mates of State cover everyone from The Mars Volta, Belle & Sebastian, Death Cab for Cutie, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Fleetwood Mac, Vashti Bunyan, Dear Nora, Daniel Johnston, and San Francisco’s Girls with their version of “Laura.”

Mates of State will be performing two nights at the Great American Music Hall…tomorrow 6/30 and Thursday 7/1…

Mates of State – Laura

Below is the original song “Laura” from San Francisco indie rockers, Girls, whose debut album, Album received a 9.1 on Pitchfork and earned the #5 spot on Spin Magazine’s best album of 2009 list.

Song of the Day – Monday 6/28/2010 Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse Present: Dark Night of the Soul (Feat Jason Lytle) June 28, 2010

For the past year, MizMuze has been hearing about the Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse/David Lynch collaboration, Dark Night of the Soul.  The album now has an official release date of July 13, 2010.

The album title comes from a metaphor used to describe a phase in a person’s spiritual life marked by a sense of loneliness and desolation.  The DNOTS album has had such a journey…not only has Danger Mouse been in a dispute with record label EMI for the past year (which is why the album is just coming out now), but two of the contributors, Mark Linkus of Sparklehorse and Vic Chesnutt took their lives since the making of the album.

Other contributors include: James Mercer of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Frank Black of the Pixies, Iggy Pop, Nina Persson of The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega, David Lynch, and Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils.

While the album was on hold, David Lynch released 5000 copies of his 100+ page book of photos which is described as a visual narrative to the DNOTS music.  Now that the album is finally being released, a “Deluxe” version of the album will contain a 48-page photo book, a poster, postcards, two LPs, a CD and a bonus instrumental CD.

You can stream the entire album at NPR, until the album is released on 7/13/10:

Jersey quartet (now based in Brooklyn), Real Estate, sing about the beach and life on the Jersey Shore, but the songs on their self-titled album that was released last year to much critical acclaim don’t sound like anything that MizMuze would imagine Snooki or The Situation would fist-pump or beat-the-beat to (and that’s a good thing)…

MizMuze is all about supporting the home team, therefore Thee Oh Sees (formerly The Ohsees, OCS, Orange County Sound, Orinoka Crash Suite) are a San Francisco underground garage rock band who may be very well be one of the hardest working bands out there—in the past few years they have released six full-length LPs and four EPs!  Their latest album, Warm Slime dropped on 5/11/2010…

Song of the Day – Wednesday 6/23/2010 Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti

MizMuze is one happy little muse and has been going World Cup Crazy this morning!!!  U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!  It was a 90 + minute nail-biter but now that we’ve won our group and are advancing to the Final 16, I now present you the SOTD (the short, celebratory version)…

LA recording artist, Ariel Pink and his band Haunted Graffiti released their album, Before Today on 6/8/2010 which received a 9.0 on Pitchfork’s Best New Music list…they play Bimbo’s on 7/10/2010.

Song of the Day – Tuesday 6/22/2010 Sonny & The Sunsets June 22, 2010

Keeping with the Summer-theme, MizMuze presents San Francisco’s Sonny & The Sunsets and their unique brand of beach pop.  Their debut LP, Tomorrow Is Alright was released on November 17th last year and was limited to 500 copies.  The band is fronted by Sonny Smith and backed by The Sunsets featuring members of Thee Oh Sees, the Fresh & Onlys, and Citay.

This is a great weekend for supporting local music, so after you’ve spent this Friday and Saturday in San Jose at the Left Coast Live festival, finish off you musical weekend by heading to SF to see Sonny & The Sunsets with Ty Segall at Bottom of the Hill on Sunday 6/27/2010.
