James Mercer of The Shins and Danger Mouse will bring their latest collaboration, Broken Bells to The Regency Ballroom on 5/21/2010 supporting their debut self-titled album. San Francisco’s The Morning Benders will open the show…tickets go on sale this Sunday 4/4/2010 at 10:00 am.
MizMuze was at The Morning Benders’ show last night at The Independent, and she and the audience were in for a treat as The Mumlers were the opening act. These local boys make good, smart music.
The San Jose six-piece band defies categorization, with their mix of guitars, accordions, clarinets, french horns, tubas, and stand-up bass they meld blues, jazz, soul, and folk that sound ancient and modern at the same time. If you get a chance to see them live and alive (not in zombie form like the video below) do so, you won’t be disappointed. And like their namesake William Mumler, a 19th century photographer who told customers he could capture the images of their deceased loved ones, they may just capture your soul.

The Mumlers latest album, Don’t Throw Me Away was released last year.
Two years ago, Dee Dee (real name Kristen Gundred) was a one-woman band who liked the name Dum Dum Girls (a play on Iggy’s “Dum Dum Boys” and Talk Talk’s “Dum Dum Girl”) so much that she reserved it on MySpace. The LA band is now a quartet and their much-anticipated debut album, I Will Be drops today. The album recalls reverbed garage sounds of the Mary Chain and 60’s girl-groups like the Shangri-Las.
New Jersey indie rockers, Titus Andronicus combine folk, punk, shoegaze and lo-fi, and have recently been named one of the Best New Bands of 2010 by Rolling Stone. The band played last night at Slim’s supported by Let’s Wrestle…
Definitely not your every day thrashers, the band’s name is based on one of Shakespeare’s plays and their second album, The Monitor was released on 3/9/2010 and is a concept album about the Civil War. In fact, many of their songs reference classic literature…it’s like Oprah’s Book Club meets the mosh pit.

Don’t call The Besnard Lakes the new John and Yoko. Husband and wife team Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas make up The Besnard Lakes, a four-piece indie rock band hailing from Montreal, Canada. Their sound has been described as expansive and generational, ranging from psychedelic ’60s rock, to cosmic ’70s pop, to post rock and shoegaze.
The band’s third album, The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night was released on 3/9/20210 which Jace Lasek describes as, “psychedelic rock – each song is its own little world, an atmosphere. I’ve always been enamored with these songs that take forever to get going, long songs that build, with a story and a long build to a climax…very much like that. Each song is a story and we really want people to listen to the record in its entirety.”

MizMuze didn’t make it to Metric as planned, but instead was Big Pimpin’ at last night’s Jay-Z concert (where the fanz and the heels were high, and the skirts were short) so she is phoning this one in. Which means…today’s SOTD is a leftover from last week’s SXSW bands.
I hope you’ll excuse the “H to the izz-O, V to the izz-A“ and start rockin’ to Dublin four-piece, Dirty Epics. They’ve been compared to Blondie, X-Ray Spex, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs (not only do they sound a bit like the YYY’s, they’re even fronted by a half-Asian lead singer, Sarah Jane Wai O’Flynn, doing her best Karen O impression)…
If you’re lucky enough to live in the beautiful Bay Area, or just happen to be visiting, you will not be able to use the excuse, “there’s nothing to do today” during the month of April.
It’s all happening here—just check out MizMuze’s Conzert Calendar and see what amazing options await you (the calendar is continuously being updated so check back often; recent updates are in bold)…
Welsh band, The School have studied their 60′s-era pop without missing a single class. Paying tribute to bands such as The Ronnettes and The Shangri-Las along with fellow UK retro indie acts like Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura, singer/songwriter, Liz Hunt explains her 60′s obsession: “My heart and brain genuinely think they’re in that era. It’s what I live and breathe so it would be unnatural for me to make any other type of music.”
The School – Let It Slip
The School’s debut album Loveless Unbeliever will drop next month.
